Our Focus

Background. Genesis Garden began as a grassroots organization dedicated to addressing and eliminating the effects of poverty through a proactive, preventative, and compassionate approach. Our inception was inspired by the rapid eviction of Shade Tree Mobile in 2010; an event that exposed the lack of transitional housing in Macomb and McDonough County for families who suddenly find themselves without a place to live.

Genesis House

Providing Shelter. To address the lack of family shelter, Genesis Garden purchased, gutted and renovated Genesis House at 307 E. Carroll Street in Macomb as emergency housing for up to four families. We have extended our services to include rapid re-housing so families can quickly move to permanent housing. Rapid rehousing in the community is an efficient, effective, best practice resolution to housing crises.

Sharing Food.

Empowering Community.

At Genesis Garden, we are moving away from the traditional service model of experts serving clients. Everyone has gifts and skills, and they want to contribute. As much as possible, employing evidence-informed practices, we are moving toward a model where the traditional recipients are the ones serving. The lines between those served and those who serve are beginning to blur.

At Genesis Garden we seek innovative, community empowering solutions.
